Futurity is very difficult to be explained in simple terms;  we can choose about a hundred ways to talk about the future, and most of them depend on how we see a future event or activity, f.e., if we have already planned it. And, our plans are not always enough to make the future happen. What is sometimes a bit easier, is to individually assess the degree of probability, which will determine, f.e., how sure you feel about the outcome of your research or future developments in your field of study. That is why, you MAY choose a modal like this to sound a bit uncertain, vague and indirect, i.e. when you do not want to make a definite, explicit and strong statement.

Bear in mind, that there are two ways of predicting the future, the expression 'BE GOING TO' refers to irreversible consequences ensuing from the observable data, whereas 'WILL' is more often used for some longer term predictions.
