To the Student. Introduction to the Course.
Who is the course for?
The course is targeted at young engineers, especially students of second-cycle studies.
It may also be of interest to recent AGH-UST graduates who wish to revise their knowledge of English by taking this course, which has been created with user-friendliness in mind.
Whether you are a student or graduate, or simply curious, this course will provide you with the tools to improve your language skills in professional contexts.
What are the prerequisites?
All participants: knowledge of English at intermediate level or above.
Students of AGH UST: a B.Sc. or B.A. degree is required.
Other students: general knowledge or interest in science and engineering is preferable.
What are the objectives of the course?
This course will advance your knowledge of English in disciplines selected from the broad spectrum taught at AGH UST in Cracow, so as to enhance your professional language skills and facilitate your further studies in English; either in Poland or abroad.
What does the course contain?
The course is comprised of modules that will allow you to learn English for specific purposes in the three main areas regarded as essential to engineers: mathematics, physics and chemistry.
There are also sections devoted to selected issues connected with the above, such as AI, smart technologies, materials science and engineering. It also encompasses subject areas such as electronics, robotics and natural sciences.
Is it necessary to do the entire course?
You may complete the entire course or you may choose only some modules, for example, only these relevant to your field of study. All modules are divided into sections which contain lessons, quizzes or other activities so within each section these activities should be done consecutively as they are logically structured and interconnected.
What does the course offer?
The course intends to enhance your professional vocabulary and boost your confidence while using English for discussing scientific issues. It will also improve your comprehension of written and spoken English.
Using texts, videos and a wide range of activities, you will explore English for specific purposes in a variety of contexts, with a particular focus on mathematics, physics and chemistry.
What is not included in the course?
You will not find any sections here on soft skills development, job recruitment or writing skills because there are other specialised courses offered by our University and also because practising these skills requires the guidance and support of a teacher.
Who are the grammar sections for?
While completing this course requires that you should have a good command of English, you may need some additional remedial grammar. The grammar explanations and exercises are for your convenience and can be perused as needed. They cover only selected issues that often cause confusion when it comes to scientific articles or technical language. Some exercices are based on material from the module.
How much time is needed to complete the course?
Each module or section is provided with an approximate time that is necessary to cover the material. The time brackets indicate the suggested times required to prepare your own answers, which depend on individual due diligence.
Is a teacher needed to complete the course?
The course is primarily intended to be self-study, therefore most answers are automatically checked and the results are provided by the platform.
What are the 'Can you explain?' sections?
Whenever you come across a 'Can you explain?' section you are asked to prepare an answer to questions connected with the lesson. You are also recommended to say your answer aloud, or even better, to record it and listen so you may confirm if you are satisfied with your subject matter knowledge and language skills.
If the course is done under supervision, you may expect the teacher to ask you the same or similar questions.
Similarly, when you get to tasks asking you to write a comment, you may check it with Grammarly, or submit your work to your teacher, if the course is done under supervision.
Links and licences. The course is based on materials under CC licences, links to which are to be found in the REFERENCE sections provided at the end of each lesson.
The Escape Room, unless otherwise indicated, is based on the self-same materials.
We hope you will enjoy and benefit from the course.
