Who is the course for?

The course is targeted at young engineers, especially students of second-cycle studies.
It may also be of interest to recent AGH-UST graduates who wish to revise their knowledge of English by taking this course, which has been created with user-friendliness in mind.

What are the prerequisites?

All participants: knowledge of English at intermediate level or above.
Students of AGH UST: a B.Sc. or B.A. degree is required.
Other students: general knowledge or interest in science and engineering is preferable.

What are the objectives of the course?

This course will advance students' knowledge of English in disciplines selected from the broad spectrum taught at AGH UST in Cracow, so as to enhance students' professional language skills and facilitate their further studies in English; either in Poland or abroad.

What does the course contain?

The course is comprised of modules that will allow students to learn English for specific purposes in the three main areas regarded as essential to engineers: mathematics, physics and chemistry.
There are also sections devoted to selected issues connected with the above, like AI, smart technologies or materials science and engineering.  It also encompasses subject areas such as electronics, robotics and natural sciences.
Students may choose modules that are relevant to them, or complete the entire course.

Is it necessary to do the entire course?

You may choose only some modules for your students, for example only relevant to their field of study, or, you may ask them to complete the entire course. All modules  are divided into sections which contain lessons, quizzes or other activities so within each section, the activities should be done consecutively, as they are logically structured and interconnected.

What does the course offer?

The course intends to enhance professional vocabulary and boost students' confidence while using English for discussing scientific issues. It will also improve their comprehension of written and spoken English.
Using texts, videos and a wide range of activities, they will explore English for specific purposes in a variety of contexts, with a particular focus on mathematics, physics and chemistry.

What is not included in the course?

Students will not find  any sections here on soft skills development, job recruitment or  writing skills because there are other specialised courses offered by our University and also because practising these skills requires the guidance and support of a teacher.

Who are the grammar sections for?

While completing this course requires that students should have a good command of English, they may need some remedial grammar. The grammar explanations and exercises are for the students' convenience and can be perused as needed.

How much time is needed to complete the course?

Each module or section is provided with approximate time that is necessary to cover the material. The time brackets indicate the suggested times required to prepare students'  own answers, which depend on individual due diligence.

Is a teacher needed to complete the course?

The course is primarily intended to be self-study, therefore most answers are automatically checked and the results are provided by the platform.

What are the 'Can you explain?' sections?

Whenever students come across a 'Can you explain?' section they are asked to prepare an answer to questions connected with the lesson. Students are also recommended to say their answer aloud, or even better, to record it and listen so they may confirm if they are satisfied with their subject matter knowledge and language skills.
If the course is done under your supervision, you may choose to ask the students the same or similar questions.
This section can be used as an additional work you may wish to assess yourself. You may ask your students to submit the answer in any form (f.e. as an mp3 or a written essay), as you deem fit.
Similarly, when students get to the tasks asking them to write a comment, you may request them to submit their work for your assessment.

As mentioned above, this is primarily a self-study course, yet it may easily be used under guidance and supervision. As a teacher, feel free to use any part of the course to suit your needs, be it an activity incorporated into your lesson plan, part of  homework or even an extra work assigned to absentees.

Links and licences. The course is based on materials under CC licences, links to which are to be found in the REFERENCE sections provided at the end of each lesson.

The Escape Room unless otherwise indicated, is based on the self-same materials.
